Introducing the Samsung S7 and S7 Edge The Latest in the Galaxy Series

The Mobile World Congress or MWC was the setting for Samsung and their new Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge debut. Launched the day before the event started, I'm sure it created a big buzz. Afterall, the previous the Samsung S6 won for Best Smartphone. The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are the latest in the Samsung Galaxy series and come packed with great features. Among other differences between the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge is the S7 Edge has rounded corners or a smooth edge. Some of the specifications of the phones are great including being waterproof and the other cool aspect is the expandable memory up to 200GB in additional memory can be added via microSD card though it is sold separately.

It appears to be slightly thicker but not by much. It is around 1 mm thicker than the S6. One difference is the camera sensor located at the level of the back of the glass. For vacations, this phone can be used for brief, shallow underwater filming up to five feet.

Processor and OS

Exynos 8990 processor with 4 GB RAM and 32GB expandable to 200 of storage via microSDcard slot make the S7 a winner. Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 SoC along with similar RAM and ROM make the Android 6.0 Marshmallow Os the ideal situation. Because of the processor and OS you should be satisfied with the performance.

Battery Specs

One great thing is that it can charged wirelessly via microUSB vs the standard USB port connection. The battery itself is 3,000 mAh for the standard S7 and 3,600 mAh for S7 Edge. The battery life and capabilities feature an Always-on display that improves battery life. You won't have to turn on your phone to find out this information saving battery usage. Information like time, date, missed calls, mail and messages will be "always on".

The S7 includes fingerprint and retina scanners. It can also scan Auto HDR, Gyro, OIS, Accelerometer, Barometer, Proximity, Heart Rate and more. The heart rate monitor is great for joggers and exercise nuts who want to measure their workouts or those who want to target weight loss zones according to age specific heart rate targets. Or use with Samsung Gear Fit to sync workout results with your phone. The fingerprint and retina scanners are great if your phone is ever lost or stolen to prevent strangers from accessing it. Your fingerprint can also activate Samsung pay if you elect this feature. If you've ever seen any of the futuristic action adventure movies you will love the retinal scan locking and unlocking feature.

Screen Display

The S7 Edge features a 5.5 inch screen and the S7 a 5.1 inch screen. Both have the AMOLEd panel display. The S7 Edge has an advantage with the panel size at 550p.

Availability and Pricing

March 11, 2016 is the kickoff date. Otherwise, you need to pre-order. The price range looks to be in the $800 to $900 or so range. The edge is 5-10% higher but it has a slightly larger screen  and a little more features. If it's a winner, prices may go up or down according to popularity. There don't seem to be many color options at this point vs previous models. That may change as the year goes on though. The colors available now are gold/platinum, black/onyx, and silver/titanium for the S7 Edge and the S7 options are black/onyx and gold/platinum.

You might want to order right away. Or you might want to wait till others test the phone and you get a stream of reviews. There might be color alternatives in future models if you're looking for another color phone. Otherwise, this is the first, great new thing in the cell phone market this year so far.
